Tec’Lilac
a futuristic and spiritual shade.
Tec’ Lilac is tectonique and mineral but also technological and evanescent.
Taking over Millennial pink at Milan design week, Lilac brings a contemporary touch with a spiritual feeling. It can feel futuristic when associated with dichroic materials but it can also be powdery and enveloping making it a very meditative color.
I have put together a little palette of references to highlight this shade that is obsessing me lately :
A little History
If purple was not always such a popular color in History, it is growing now a days. “Ultra violet” was actually Pantone color of the year for 2018 in a dark indigo shade.
In the past, purple was associated with religion and spirituality. That is probably one of the reason it is catching on today as spirituality is a raising topic. Lilac in particular has this softness and minerality setting the mood for a re-connection with nature and oneself.
Cinema and visual art also often associate purple with futuristic technologies. Even Samsung launched their last design in a dichroic lilac shade. A good demonstration of the evolution of our relationship to technology which can sometimes become close to a cult.
A color for women’s rights
But let’s not forget that purple was the color chosen by the first Feminists to fight for women's rights in the XXth century. I recently watched The Suffragettes by Sarah Gavron. It is an amazing movie where Carrey Mulligan is proudly wearing on her hat purple gillyflowers with this specific shade of lilac.
So purple is also the color of a very important fight and we should not forget about it. The french singer Angèle recently honored this fight in her video clip “Balance ton quoi” and she even designed purple feminist shirts for the occasion.
In short
Technology, mindfulness, women’s rights… Purple and more precisely Lilac is a shade which really echoes in today’s society and it’s making its way in the design world.
