LDF 2021 Highlight
It was while walking the streets of the London Design Festival, lost in the Shoreditch Triangle that I stumbled upon Iona Thomas’s work. I was handed over a leaflet outside the tube and got immediately drawn to the colourful lines of the Zebrina collection. So I followed the lines until I reached the little gallery.
It was a random day in the middle of the week so Iona was alone quietly eating lunch when I entered her gallery. She took the time to show me around and explain her amazing story. I couldn’t help but notice that her entire outfit, including her nails, were matching her collection.

Zebrina collection
“ During the lockdown, I got so jealous of people in furlough. They had all this time to do amazing things ! So I decided to work late at night and do a project of my own even if I still had to work during the day.”
The Zebrina collection is inspired by a plant that Iona happened to save from her work place before going into lockdown : Tradescantia Zebrina. She got so fond of it that she started drawing some patterns and ended up designing an entire collection.
This collection is, for me, an ode to the pandemic. It would not have happened without it and it shows how this historical moment also brought the best in people. When most of us were stuck in front of Netflix feeling sorry for ourselves Iona took this opportunity to push her limits and make the most out of it.
