Primal 2.0

Redefining the notion of craft by merging instinct and technology.

Ecological concerns and the idea that the world like we know it is already doomed is common knowledge. But it often feels like a far away concept.

2020 and the global pandemic gave us a taste of what a drastic change of reality is and it was already a big lesson for most people. It made us learn in a global way the concept of Resilience. It showed us how to accept and adapt to things that we have no control upon.

But unfortunately the global pandemic was probably just a glimpse of what awaits in the future. Already the war in Ukraine immediately followed. At some point, we will have to go back to a state of survival, go back to being primal.

How to go back to primary ways without forgetting all what humanity has achieved technically and emotionally ? How to use new technologies in a sustainable way for the future that awaits ? Can we become Primal humans 2.0 ?

Neo craft

The Primal 2.0 collection explores shape through instinct and new technologies. It redefines the notion of craft using 3D printing and eco friendly materials to give life to objects designed following primal instincts.

Material

For this project, the goal was to use the most sustainable materials as possible. Therefor, I worked with a PLA-based composite formula made out of 40% recycled wood fibres and 60% of recycled PLA.

PLA is a thermoplastic derived from renewable, organic sources such as corn starch or sugar cane. It was important to me for this material to not just be a biomaterial but also 100% recycled.

I also developed a texture giving the object a more natural aspect and a craft feeling. The result is an object gravitating between the world of technology, craftsmanship and Nature.

This project is the result of a research done to write the Resilience article exploring the notions of evolution, technology and craft.
